Choosing a luxury company car while thinking about BMW car insurance

BMW. the mere mention of the marque causes the mind to start ticking. This way and that, owners worry about the price of BMW car insurance, or many of us may immediately think "top brand car" or "driven by idiots".

Whether known affectionately and stylishly as a 'Beemer', funnily as 'Break My Windows' or 'Bring Me Women' or genuinely as an abbreviation of Bayerische Motoren Werke, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works, the BMW brand is not without its controversy as well as amusing side.

Years ago, I was fortunate enough to enjoy the benefit of a company car. There were three main manufacturers that I weighed up before deciding what should be my work wagon - Volkswagen Bora, Alfa Romeo 157 and, of course, BMW.

To help decide which was best, I test drove all three. For three weekends, I felt like someone special - driving up to my front door with a new car every Friday and then putting the shiny, plush vehicles through their paces for the best part of 60 or so hours.

It was terrific, although I never quite got over feeling a bit "too rich" and perhaps out of place in machines costing many thousands of pounds.

In the end I was maybe scared away from the BMW by the price, although I needn't have worried about looking around for the cheapest car insurance - I would not have had to pay the BMW car insurance, the company would have done!

While similar in comfort and ride to the VW Bora, the cost of lower monthly payments steered me towards the Volkswagen - I forced myself to recognise the harsh reality of running a car... how (stupidly!) pragmatic was I?

But now, years on, it was the BMW which seems to have left a more indelible mark on my consciousness than the other two. That BMW I drove was a 3-series coupé. The salesman knew what he was doing putting me in such a smart, powerful motor.

The paintwork was gold. I've not driven a (solid!) gold car since and there was something magnetic and attractive about the experience, and perhaps just a little morally repugnant. Really, I'm not sure why but it didn't seem quite right to step into a vehicle that got you from A-to-B in a more expensive and luxurious fashion than any run-of-the-mill Ford Fiesta or secondhand Vauxhall.

The outside was typical BMW - German engineering that hinted at power and being a slightly ugly beast while contrasting with the beauty of the smooth, quiet ride and comfortable, understated interior.

Smooth - that was a good description for this Beemer. I drove to see my team mates for our regular weekend senior football game and felt horribly like a million dollars as the cars around me were mostly rust buckets or well down the ranking tables as cars to be seen in.

To be honest, I maybe felt a bit out of place - but to drive the thing was a truly wonderful experience and I did enjoy every minute. This was a car for grown ups when probably I was still a kid.

So my experience of the BMW marque was a pretty favourable one - I experienced, and could maybe have run, an aspirational brand. You know, it feels like I'm kicking myself now. Darn it! I could have run that 3-series for a few years, and after all, the company was paying the BMW car insurance bill!
