The lying - and lighter - side of car insurance claims
Motorists, it seems, are an immoral - or should that be amoral - bunch... new UK research reveals 11-million-plus drivers happily confess to being liars when it comes to car insurance claims.
Is there a difference between being a 'motor insurance liar' and just a common-or-garden, plain human 'liar'?
This is where I get confused and upset by life among these dishonest types. If millions of people are prepared to lie on car insurance claims - presumably in case they lose out on payouts - can we ever expect these types to tell the truth?
Or, more to the point, when will they ever put their hands up and say, "it's a fair cop, it was me, I'm the one that messed up."?
Can't see it happening with this 15-20 per cent of the British population. How scary is that?
Seems reasonable to conclude that there's a level of accepted practice across the UK (maybe the whole world?) to be at least "economical with the truth" where some kind of advantage can be gained.
Don't get me wrong - I'm no moralising judgemental kind of citizen journalist. Countries, populations, businesses, politicians - society, I guess - will reap what they sow over time.
But if the sea of lies is starting to reach proportions of this magnitude, something must surely be wrong with the fabric of society? When the beach is littered with sand and pebbles made up of lie after lie, where are we headed?
To be honest, I don't want to go there today. That train of thought - presumably covering issues like evil, theft, jail, organised crime etc - can be an article for another day, methinks.
Let's look on the funny side of lying or twisting the truth for our own ends.
I always laugh at those insurance claims involving stationary objects. Imagine the police officer here:
"Ok sir - tell me again. what speed was the post box doing when it suddenly shot out in front of you?"
You have to chuckle. There's no way any car insurance company is going to hold the post box responsible.
Hang on a minute - or is there? Maybe the Royal Mail can be sued for a dodgy red pillar box that fell on to the road. Sheesh - you see where this all becomes confusing. Maybe the truth is that the post box did shoot out into the road. Bleh, this is doing my head in.
Let's find another funny one and put to one side the questionable ethics of dodgy insurance claims. Sometimes, it's just better medicine to enjoy a really good guffaw!
Here we go, "Heading off to the shops at 9.30am, I drove out of my drive and hit a bus. The bus was two minutes early."
Ah well, we can try a legal claim against the bus company then. Ha ha.
What about our Australian motoring friends across the other side of the world?
This one should make most of us smile (or rather, spontaneously laugh out loud in my case), "I was driving on the highway when I saw two kangaroos copulating in the middle of the road causing me to ejaculate through the sun roof."
You didn't laugh? Apologies - it appealed to my sense of humour this week.
And all this laughter medicine serves to highlight that the 'car insurance liar' is perhaps more of a comedian. i.e. someone who sees the funny side of life despite those depressing moments when surveying some kind of lack of driving skill! Enjoy making your next claim, won't you.
