Going green while searching for the cheapest car insurance

In the search for the cheapest car insurance my interest was drawn to the growing array of eco-friendly initiatives springing up that seem designed to persuade motorists that they can drive while saving the planet at the same time.

I have to count myself as a major skeptic when it comes to believing that anywhere in the near future motor vehicles will have a positive effect on the environment.

It is well known that cars, vans and lorries pollute the atmosphere. A vast array of advertising promoting the virtues of greener vehicles (note the 'er' suffix at the end of green) does not persuade me that I can become a better world citizen by owning one.

I worry that the majority of drivers can be hoodwinked by marketing ploys into thinking that by buying, say, a so-called eco-car or even a green car insurance policy, they are suddenly breathing new life into a world that is probably overwhelmed by pollution at the moment.

It is time to press pause on the media 'green' trickery film show that is currently parading before our eyes. It is time to think carefully about what we're seeing.

Motor vehicles across the countries of the world are emitting tonnes of carbon-loaded, polluting gasses, not to mention, say, factories and people's homes.

Faced with scientific evidence that a global warming crisis is gradually unfolding on this planet that we call our home, governments across the globe are trying to organise ways to reduce the damaging effect of all this pollution to ensure human beings don't become extinct.

It is these kinds of fears about such a devastating 'ground zero' event that are at the heart of the green environmental debate.

No-one wants to be seen as 'the guy (or girl) who destroyed the planet'. Business marketing has cottoned on to the underlying discomfort that we are all developing - that, in fact, we are destroying, or at least significantly harming, our world.

With some deft advertising trickery, suddenly we can become part of the campaigning green movement that is helping and saving planet Earth.

Just like Little Jack Horner in the nursery rhyme who pulled a plum out of his pie, many motorists think they can put their hands into their pockets, pull out some money to buy a new car - or green insurance for cars - and say "what a good green boy (or girl) am I"!

It doesn't add up. Surely buying and running more cars - certainly more petrol and diesel vehicles - cannot make the world a greener place. People aren't daft enough to think this is helping, are they?

I did say I was a skeptic. I know that governments are working to cut carbon emissions and so reducing emissions from vehicles can contribute to achieving such targets. But it must be pointed out that reducing carbon emissions is not the same as removing or eliminating carbon emissions.

That's my key argument - and conclusion. The problem is not being solved. Greenhouse gases continue to pour into the atmosphere while the earth's temperature continues to rise. Only when all cars and other vehicles emit non-polluting gases will we be on the road to a better environment.
