Cheap car insurance firm discovers 4 million will drink drive this Christmas
A large survey carried out by a cheap car insurance company has revealed that over 4 million drivers in the UK will risk their lives and their motor insurance by drink driving over the Christmas period.
In its research Churchill Car Insurance found a disturbing lack of concern about driving while over the limit amongst the surveyed motorists.
One million drivers actually admitted that they would probably drink drive this Christmas, with a large proportion mistakenly believing that as long as they could walk straight they would be fine to drive.
Frances Browning, spokesperson for the cheap car insurance firm, said: "Judging whether they are fit to drive by trying to walk in a straight line is not an effective method. Driving while under the influence of alcohol endangers lives and can have serious consequences."
The research also shows that, despite the many anti-drink drive campaigns that have been issued over the years, 500,000 motorists are still happy to admit that they will drive no matter how much they drink.
When asked for their reason for drink driving, many of these drivers said that it was for lack of other options because they didn't want to wait for public transport or pay for a taxi ride.
Ms Browning advised: "Drivers should seriously consider the need to take the car before heading out for a Christmas drink.
"If they do end up drinking alcohol and have the car with them, they must find an alternative mode of transport to get home."
Corrine Aldous, of cheap motor insurance quote company duck2water Car Insurance Services, said: "The number of people still willing to endanger themselves and other people by drink driving is astounding considering the hard-hitting campaigns that have been on our TVs.
"I urge these motorists to reconsider their decision to drink drive; it could be a change of heart that saves their lives."
