Top five lies that will harm your car insurance quote
When an insurer gives you a car insurance quote they rely on the information you provide to gauge the risk that you present as a driver. If you do not reveal all your details or 'massage the truth' relating to your vehicle or driving history, then you are effectively attempting to defraud your insurer and this can be seen as extremely serious.
Just as people want to save money during difficult economic times, insurance companies are clamping down on fraudulent claims and if they suspect that the insured has misled them when obtaining a cheap quote they are likely to make the policy invalid and you could be left with a very nasty claims bill.
Here are five of the most seemingly innocuous little car insurance quote fibs that could cause a large amount of trouble for a car owner who tries to make a claim.
1. "Are you the main driver?" - "Yes."
If an experienced driver tries to obtain a cheap car insurance policy for a young driver by posing as the main user of the vehicle, it becomes an offence known as 'fronting'. In the event of a claim on a fronted policy, your insurer may deem the insurance invalid and refuse to pay out, thereby leaving you with third party costs as well as your own repairs to pay for.
This will also result in an increase in your car insurance renewal quote.
2. "Do you have any convictions?" - "No."
If you have been convicted of a driving offence within the last five years it is a good idea to tell your car insurance provider, even if the incident did not result in an accident or car insurance claim. Likewise if you receive a conviction during the life of your policy, you must inform your insurer and they may recalculate the cost of your policy.
With a motoring conviction on your licence it is likely that you will be seen as a greater risk and your car cover will cost more, but lying can prove more costly if you are found out after a claim has been made and your policy is subsequently invalidated.
3. "Have you ever made a claim?" - "No."
When supplying information for a car insurance quote you must tell the insurer if you have been involved in an incident, car accident or have made a claim in the past three years; even if you were not to blame for the accident or you merely reported an incident that you made no claim for. Your insurer uses this information to calculate the risk involved in insuring you and if you misrepresent yourself your insurer may not be required to pay out in the event of a claim.
4. "Does your car have any modifications?" - "No."
Modified cars are regarded as carrying greater risk of accident involvement and high repair costs. If you fail to disclose information regarding modifications made to your car before or during the life of the policy, you could be left with a large repair bill in the event of an accident.
5. "Where will your car be kept overnight?" - "In a locked garage."
When calculating your car insurance quote the insurer will take into consideration local crime rates and the frequency of accidents on nearby roads, so if your car is parked on a busy road, the risk is greater than if it is stored safely in a garage. If you have told your insurer you have a garage and your car is stolen off the street, you could once again find that the insurance company do not have to pay out as you have fraudulently obtained your cheap car insurance quote.
