Drivers urged to check car insurance quotes for Europe cover

Drivers getting car insurance quotes ahead of their summer holidays are being urged to check that they will be covered by prospective policies.

The motor insurance company American Express Insurance Services found that more than 3 million UK drivers take their cars to the continent each year.

However, some of these inevitably run into difficulty when they are involved in an accident or break down whilst abroad.

This is not the time to find out a car insurance policy does not cover you outside of the UK, as costs for transporting a broken down car from overseas can exceed £2,000.

Corrine Aldous, spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services, said: "If you are expecting to have to drive abroad, you should check for international cover when you are getting car insurance quotes or breakdown cover.

"However, if you have already purchased a policy and you aren't sure whether or not it covers you for driving in Europe, you should contact your insurance provider."
