Exports began to Europe in 1968 and to America in 1970, heralding the start of significant export success for Mazda. By 1973, over 1 million Mazdas had been exported from Japan.

The 1980s brought the Familia (or 323) up to date, a model which won the Japanese Car of the Year prize in 1980-1981. The 626 was introduced in 1986 and soon received numerous awards such as "Import Car of the Year" and a position in the "10best" rankings.

1990 saw the introduction of the legendary MX5 Miata, the world's best selling roadster. The MX5 was yet another Mazda that won a range of prizes, including "Automobile of the Year" and was voted top car by all three of Australia's motoring magazines. This was unprecedented for a sports car.

Mazda have come strongly into the new millennium, with awards and sales figures still flowing in. The updated MX5 has received positive reviews in 2006 and has celebrated its 35 million sales milestone.
