It may seem an obvious point, but a 2009 survey undertaken by motor insurance company uSwitch found that up to 65 percent of drivers were knowingly using cars with invalidated car insurance as a result of not having passed an MOT.
Of that group, 80 percent claimed it was simply due to forgetfulness. A third took at least a month to recall that their MOT was due, and a tenth even longer than that.
In addition to the fine of up to £1000 that may be imposed on someone who drives without a valid MOT certificate, the fact that it renders that driver's cheap car insurance void means that he or she may well find they are liable for any costs of repair or personal injury that result from an accident that occurs while the vehicle is not certificated.
If convicted of driving without an MOT, it is likely that a driver's motor insurance premiums will increase - by over 40 percent, in some cases. Once these are considered, forgetting a date with an MOT garage appears to be a notable risk. As a spokesperson for the online car insurance firm comments, "failure to remember your MOT renewal date is not only an offence, but the potential safety and financial consequences are a hefty price to pay for an innocent lapse of memory."
