Smokers could pose cheap car insurance threat
Research from Motorpoint has shown that 62% of people want smoking to be banned in private cars as well as commercial vehicles, partly because of the safety implications of smoking and because of a threat to cheap car insurance.
Motorpoint, an online car supermarket, carried out a survey of its customers which found that six in 10 would be in favour of extending the ban on smoking in business vehicles to cover all cars on the roads.
A spokesperson for Motorpoint said: "The introduction of the ban on smoking has provoked a real divide amongst consumers, but there is evidently a real concern about the potential risks to passenger health which is not applicable to all motorist consumers at present."
Research undertaken by Brunel University on behalf of cheap car insurance company Privilege has also shown that smokers tend to drive faster than non-smokers, behaviour which could pose a risk to other road users and smokers' own motor insurance.
A spokesperson for Brunel University said: "The study clearly shows that smokers do have a tendency to drive faster and more inconsistently than non-smokers - in effect, confirming theories that smokers tend to have a more risk-taking attitude to life.
"It's also clear that smoking is an activity that diverts a driver's attention away from the task of driving, especially for those drivers who choose to start smoking in their car following the ban. Drivers should therefore exercise extreme caution and discretion if they choose to smoke and drive."
