Cheap car insurance firms to offer electronic certificates

The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has welcomed the news that motorists will soon be able to receive their cheap car insurance certificates via email.

Following a lengthy consultation, the Department for Transport (DfT) has agreed that motor insurance companies should be able to supply online car insurance certificates as well as using the traditional method of sending them through the post.

BIBA has long believed that this will have a very positive impact on the online car insurance market. This is because it could save insurers money, which may lead to cheap car insurance deals for motorists, and improve the customer experience by cutting delivery times.

It was in fact BIBA which encouraged the consultation by the DfT, and a spokesperson for the organisation commented: "In its consultation document, the DfT states that it is keen to encourage developments in technology which bring benefits and we believe this is essential.

"The insurance industry has been forced to stay in the dark ages for too long and we are eager to start providing up-to-date services to our customers.

"We believe that allowing the insurance industry to issue electronic motor insurance certificates would have a positive effect for consumers, the industry and the environment."
