Rural Road Awareness campaign could help drivers keep cheap car insurance

The Rural Road Awareness campaign has been launched to alert Scotland's motorists about the danger to themselves and their cheap car insurance of driving too fast on country roads.

According to statistics, 70% of fatal car crashes in Scotland occur on rural roads. It is hoped that the Rural Road Awareness campaign, which has been organised by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland and Road Safety Scotland, will help to reduce the huge numbers of people killed on these minor roads.

A spokesperson for Road Safety Scotland said: "The biggest hurdle that all those involved in road safety have to overcome is the belief among drivers and riders that 'it won't happen to me'.

"Unfortunately for them, that's not the case, and our media is full of high-profile stories about fatal and serious injuries."

The Rural Road Awareness campaign hopes to cut the speed of vehicles on Scottish country roads, as this often plays a part in accident. If successful, it may also reduce the number of motor insurance claims that Scottish drivers have to make.

A spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services, a specialist cheap car insurance company, said: "Although the speed limit may be 60 on some of these roads, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is always safe to travel that fast.

"When driving on rural roads, always consider what could be around the next corner and check whether your speed is appropriate with this in mind."
