Car-jacker remembers cheap car insurance before speeding around West Sussex
A female motorist from Horsham was left standing shaken after a car-jacker forced her out her car then drove off - but curiously appeared to be concerned about her motor insurance.
The lady had been waiting in her Vauxhall Corsa outside a pub in the West Sussex market town when a man, reportedly in his 20s, approached. He threatened her with a broken bottle before leaping into the car and speeding off.
As he drove off, he shouted "It's insured", then proceeded to drive at high speeds around Sussex. He first travelled down to West Grinstead, where he filled up with petrol without paying, then travelled into Portslade and Hove, at which point police started following him.
However, the chase had to be called off when the thief started travelling at speeds of more than 80mph and veering onto the wrong side of the road. He then drove east, through Southwick and into Worthing and Littlehampton.
He was finally apprehended after driving into a close in Middleton, near Bognor Regis. Sussex Police ended the chase by ramming the side of the Corsa and revealed that a Pulborough man had been arrested.
Corrine Aldous, of the cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services, commented: "It sounds like this was a very dangerous piece of driving by this thief.
"However, it remains a mystery why he would be thinking about his victim's cheap car insurance cover just seconds after threatening her and stealing her car."
