Cheap car insurance company reveals 1.1m drivers risking ban
The cheap car insurance company Direct Line has revealed that more than a million drivers in the UK are right on the upper limit of penalty points they can get away with before being banned.
Its research found that 1.1 million people will be banned from driving if they receive one more conviction that holds penalty points as a punishment - such as speeding.
Motorists who have been driving more than two years have a maximum of 12 penalty points that they can incur before receiving a driving ban. Many driving offences carry three penalty points, with the most recent being driving while using a hand-held mobile phone. However, more serious motoring offences can mean drivers incur six penalty points.
The number of motorists who are riding this very fine limit has grown dramatically since 2005. According to the cheap car insurance company's research, since this time more than 215,000 drivers have joined the group of those risking a ban if convicted again.
Some blame this rise on the proliferation of speed cameras on the UK's roads, such as the organiser of the Safe Speed campaign, Paul Smith.
He said: "Running the daily gauntlet of speed cameras is making us into a nation of worse drivers - ask anyone on nine points.
"Those on six points or more are finding it considerably harder to concentrate on the road ahead."
A motor insurance spokesperson for Direct Line commented: "With the advent of speed cameras and the introduction of points for being caught driving using a mobile phone, we urge motorists not to break the law as they could face numerous consequences, such as killing or injuring themselves or others, disqualification, job loss and financial loss."
