Hartlepool man pays twice for cheap car insurance
UK motorists have been advised to check that they cancel their old motor insurance policy if they switch their cheap car insurance provider, otherwise they could end up being insured twice.
The warning comes after a Hartlepool man was found to have been paying for two car insurance policies for a whole year. He did not realise that his old insurance provider would renew his policy automatically if he did not cancel it, and bought a policy with another cheap car insurance firm on this basis.
A spokesperson for Hartlepool Council said: "These automatic insurance renewals are intended as a safeguard for customers who might otherwise forget to renew their insurance.
"However, it's essential that people notify their insurance company if they no longer want the policy or intend to switch to a different insurer, otherwise they could end up being charged twice for the same thing as their bank will honour any existing direct debit arrangement."
It is not yet known whether the car insurance customer will get his money back from his old insurer.
