French drivers risking cheap car insurance by driving recklessly in election run up

Motorists have been wreaking havoc in France throughout January, creating headaches for their cheap car insurance companies, as they think they will get pardoned when the new president is elected.

The presidential pardon to all drivers who have committed minor (and some not so minor) traffic violations is something of a tradition in France, and one that motorists are all too eager to take advantage of.

Unfortunately, this eagerness can result in tragedy, and this may be reflected in the fatal road accident statistics from January 2007. A 13.9% rise has been recorded in the last month, a fact which has bucked the downward trend from 2006.

Dominique Perben, transport minister for France, commented: "I hope that is not what it is but it is probably that the vagueness which remains as far as the prospects of an amnesty are concerned may be involved.

"That is why I am repeating my request to all candidates in the presidential election. I hope they all.come out clearly against any form of clemency and do not promise an amnesty on traffic offences."

It is not known exactly how France's cheap car insurance companies will react to offences pardoned by the president. However, it is likely that motor insurance firms won't be quick to forget all of the accidents caused by those driving recklessly.
