Islington drivers seen putting cheap car insurance at risk
A study by the Islington Gazette has revealed that a significant proportion of London drivers are risking their cheap car insurance by using a hand-held mobile at the wheel.
An hour-long observation was made of motorists driving past Kings Cross station and researchers noted 12 drivers who were talking on hand-held phones.
The penalty for this was increased in February 2007 and motorists caught by police face three penalty points on their licence, along with a £60 fine.
However, the points may be more of a financial punishment than the fine, with one cheap car insurance company warning that the three points could mean a £150 hike in motor insurance premiums.
A spokesperson for Islington Police said: "The public know the penalties and the risk associated with using phones while driving.
"It can cause accidents, it can cause injuries and we will take action against offenders."
