Kent motorists get chance to save cheap car insurance after mobile phone conviction

Kent motorists who get caught driving whilst talking on a hand-held phone will be offered the chance to save their cheap car insurance by going on a "Call Divert" course.

The penalties for this offence will be increased on February 27th 2007, when convicted drivers will face a £60 fine and three points on their licence, which would mean a certain increase in their motor insurance quotes.

However, drivers from the Thames Valley could be able to dodge the points if they attend an educational workshop. Each motorist would have to pay £74 to attend the two-and-a-half-hour session, which would teach them about the consequences of driving without regard for other road users.

Malcolm Collis, from Thames Valley Police, said: "My advice is to switch your mobile phone off when you get into a vehicle. Any call is a distraction and we know this causes crashes."

Corrine Aldous, of the cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services, added: "If you are caught driving whilst using a hand-held mobile and don't go on one of these courses, you are likely to be a looking at very real implications for your motor insurance premium."
