Huddersfield motorists warned of threat to cheap car insurance from hand held mobile phones

Police are cracking down on motorists around Huddersfield who use hand-held mobile phones whilst driving before the new, harsher penalties are introduced.

From 2007, if caught driving with a hand-held mobile, motorists can expect a £60 fine - that is double the current sum - and three penalty points to be added to their licence.

It is likely that the penalty points will cost a driver more than the fine, as many cheap car insurance companies will raise their motor insurance premiums significantly for those who have committed a driving offence.

The penalties for driving while using a hand-held mobile have been gradually increased over time in order to allow motorists a fair amount of time to get used to them.

However, police have found that many drivers aren't getting out of the habit and are still using their mobiles behind the wheel. Recently, Huddersfield Police caught five drivers doing so in just 90 minutes.

Those who were stopped had a variety of excuses for breaking the law.

One explained that his mobile phone was virtually unused but it had just happened to ring that day while he was in the car.

He said: "One of my mates phoned me while I was at the traffic lights so I thought I'd answer it. He owes me a few drinks now for the trouble he's caused.

When stopped by the police, an elderly driver proclaimed that he was "too old for a mobile phone" and he had simply been driving with a hand by the side of his face.
However, he was caught out moments later when a clear 'cock-a-doodle-do' came from his pocket.

There is a significant risk to cheap car insurance premiums by using a mobile phone while driving.

Sgt Grosier, of Huddersfield Police, explained: "Statistics show you are four times more likely to be involved in an accident if you are on a mobile phone.

"It is the same statistic if you are using a hands-free so there must be a concentration problem there too.

"Simply turn the phone off when you drive so you won't be tempted to answer it. People still take chances and think it will never happen to them. But it does, and when that happens, it's too late," he warned.
