Cheap car insurance company reveals parking price hikes
Direct Line has revealed a huge increase in the amount that British drivers are paying for parking in the last few years.
The cheap car insurance company found a 25% average increase in car parking fees across the UK since 2000.
Motorists worst affected by the price hikes are those living in Hertfordshire, Northumberland and Kent, some of whom have seen their parking charges rocket up by 90%.
The motor insurance firm's research also found that drivers were sometimes having to pay more than £7 for just two hours of parking in London, with Westminster, Islington and Kensington all being areas with this costly rate.
The increasing costs are forcing many drivers to park illegally, with 13% reporting that they simply could not afford to pay for a proper car parking space.
A spokesperson for Direct Line said: "Parking is a bone of contention for most drivers in the UK and our research shows that because of rocketing costs and limited spaces drivers are literally forced to wittingly break the law - and consequently be hit with fines in the process."
The cheap car insurance firm's advised: "If you are driving into a busy place its worthwhile doing some research to find out about any park and ride schemes or any cheap car parks in advance as it could save you serious money."
