Drug drivers risking more than cheap car insurance

Motorists are being warned to avoid risking their cheap car insurance and their lives by driving whilst under the influence of drugs.

Police are increasingly using roadside tests to identify people who they suspect are "unfit to drive" because of drugs - either illegal or prescription - in their system. There are four components to the tests, which include an examination of the driver's eyes and balancing on one leg.

A spokesperson for London's Metropolitan Police explained that driving under the influence of drugs can have a serious effect on reaction times and cause an inability to judge speed and distance correctly. All of these can mean accidents - and a loss of cheap car insurance.

However, he also warned that the consequences could be more serious than pricey motor insurance quotes.

He commented: "The chances of being involved in a collision are significantly increased - which may result in serious injury or death. As well as these dangers, you may lose your job as a result or end up in prison."

A member of the Association of Chief Police Officers has also spoken of his support for people taking prescription drugs which impair their coordination to be stopped from driving.

He said: "We've got to err on the safe side. If a drug can have that result then I think we've got to say to people I'm sorry, if you need this drug, then you shouldn't drive."
