Cheap car insurance risked by 70 days at the wheel

People who drive in the course of their working day spend an average of 70 days a year behind the wheel, a long time which presents a significant risk to their chances of keeping cheap car insurance rates.

A survey by Bank of Scotland Vehicle Finance has found that cars are still by far the preferred form of transport for employees, but that congestion and traffic jams means that valuable working time is being wasted.

The results of the survey showed that 80% of companies do not promote use of public transport or any alternative method of travel, with 75% of respondents saying that they would never consider the bus as a possible mode of transport when going to a meeting.

The research also found that ladies are particularly attached to their company cars - and it's hardly surprising since they get such cheap car insurance rates. According to its findings, women rank having a company car above other perks such as profit share bonus schemes, flexi working time, and healthcare provision.

A spokesperson for Bank of Scotland Vehicle Finance said: "There is certainly a clear lack of direction by employers when it comes to encouraging alternative modes of transport. Whilst drivers often enjoy the comfort that their own vehicle provides, it is becoming evident that employers need to adopt a more flexible approach when it comes to travel arrangements."

He went on to point out that around half of those interviewed said that they would not want to risk their motor insurance by driving whilst using a mobile phone, meaning that they could not conduct any business whilst behind the wheel.
