Uninsured drivers posing cheap car insurance threat

New police statistics have shown that there are a high number of uninsured drivers in Ross-shire who are putting other road users and their cheap car insurance at risk.

Just over 175 motorists have been caught in the area without motor insurance since near the beginning of 2007, with 47 of these being found to be driving unroadworthy vehicles.

A spokesperson for Dingwall police said: "We were conscious of the problem on a day to day basis but it wasn't until we carried out an analysis that we realised the real figure."

He went on to point out that driving without a valid cheap car insurance policy could have many poor outcomes.

He commented: "The risk of uninsured drivers is great. At the very worst they can take someone's life, while to others it may mean loss of income through injury, or loss of a vehicle, which can have long lasting consequences when there's no financial recompense."

A spokesperson for the AA road safety criticised the situation, saying: "Unfortunately it doesn't take much for people to work out the cost benefits of being uninsured. The British legal system takes an individual's financial means into consideration and if they are too impoverished to pay for insurance they are often given an even lesser fine."
