Sainsbury's Bank reveals cheap car insurance decline in 2006

Sainsbury's Bank has revealed that it is becoming more difficult for drivers to get a cheap car insurance deal, as its Car Insurance Index recorded an average 2.1% rise in 2006.

The average premium at the beginning of 2006 was £462.77 but this had risen to £472.52 by the end of the year.

It revealed that young drivers had suffered the greatest increase in the last year, with many seeing a rise of almost 6% in their motor insurance quotes.

However, it is not all bad news for British motorists. Drivers aged over 65 will be able to get a better deal on their insurance, as their average premiums fell by 0.5%.

Steve Johnson, spokesperson for Sainsbury's Bank, explained that motorists should actively seek out cheap car insurance deals if they want to avoid paying over the odds.

He said: "It always pays to keep a close eye on your car insurance premiums and shop around to make sure that you are paying a competitive rate because you could enjoy significant savings of over £100."
