Second lifetime ban rules out cheap car insurance for man once more
There are calls for harsher penalties for people who repeatedly break motoring laws following one Edinburgh man's 11th conviction.
It has been a long time since it has been possible for the 27-year-old to get a cheap car insurance quote. In fact, he will never even have the chance of getting motor insurance cover ever again, after he was given a lifetime driving ban in December 2005.
However, this has not deterred the Scottish man from taking to the roads. Since his ban he has been imprisoned for driving whilst disqualified twice - the second offence occurring just two days after he was released from prison for the first.
He has now been sentenced to prison for nine months (reduced from one year due to a guilty plea) and banned for life again, the maximum penalty available to the Scottish court.
The Sheriff in charge of the man's most recent trial said that he had "one of the most horrendous records for repeated contempt of court."
He went on to say: "It is appalling. This case points to the inadequacy of a 12-month maximum sentence for driving while disqualified on indictment especially in the situation of repeat offending."
A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "It certainly sounds as if there should be a greater deterrent for committing this crime, as the current level of punishment appears to be having little effect."
