Cheap car insurance firm boss says outsourcing is "cheapskate"

The head of a cheap car insurance company has criticised the way that many other motor insurance firms have outsourced their call centres.

The 58-year-old boss of Swinton Insurance has slammed the outsourcing of customer services, saying that it is "short-sighted, misguided and a cheapskate approach to insurance."

He is using the fact that some motor insurance companies have been moving their call centres back into the UK as proof of his argument that off-shoring is not the answer. Amongst the most notable firms to do so are Norwich Union and the online car insurance provider esure.

He employs Swinton's success as a company that has kept its call centres in Britain as further evidence that telephone work in Britain can be cost effective.

He commented: "We're in our sixth year of growth, and we've doubled our policy numbers in the past five years."

He also believes that the key to keeping the cheap car insurance company at the top of the rankings is to ensure that customers have a variety of ways to get their motor insurance quotes.

He said: "The needs of customers will be best served in the future by a multi-channel capability.

"Customers want to choose how they buy insurance and, in a similar way to other retail models, it is essential we allow customers the freedom to choose the channel that suits them."
