White Van Men not so bad, says cheap car insurance company
93% of white van men claim that their bad reputation is undeserved, according to research by a cheap car insurance company.
Cornhill Direct surveyed 1,500 white van drivers to mark ten years of the "White Van Man" phrase, which was first used on Radio 2.
It revealed that many hated the white van stereotype because it did not accurately portray their own attitudes towards driving.
One said: "It's unrealistic to think that drivers of white vans can go around abusing other motorists and speeding.
"People don't seem to realise that if I were to drive badly or break the law, I might get points on my licence or even a ban. If that were to happen I would instantly lose my job, so it's in my best interest to drive well."
Many of those surveyed by the motor insurance provider seemed to agree with this safe driving attitude, with 82% saying that they had never gestured rudely at other motorists, 93% saying that they never park on double yellow lines and 90% saying that they never use a mobile phone while driving.
A spokesperson for Cornhill Direct commented: "They come in for a lot of criticism so it's about time White Van Man had a chance to have his say.
"It's easy to stereotype certain groups of motorists but the truth is these guys are driving for the majority of the day and on the whole are experienced, knowledgeable drivers who actually have a pretty good accident record."
The cheap car insurance firm also asked white van men who they thought the worst drivers on the road were, and found that this much-maligned group put BMW drivers at the top of the bad driving ratings.
Also up there at the top were women in 4x4s, boy racers and Sunday drivers, whilst Land Rover, Porsche, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, and Citroen drivers also featured further down on the list.
The Cornhill Direct spokesperson also said: "We have recognised that van drivers are responsible road users and are offering motor insurance specifically aimed at White Van Man, and White Van Woman for that matter."
