Wiltshire Police checking cheap car insurance

A crackdown on uninsured driving in Wiltshire will mean that motorists who don't ensure their cheap car insurance is up to date are likely to be caught by police.

Police will be using automatic number plate recognition to check cars on both minor lanes and major roads in the county.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "This is a significant operation and we will be specifically targeting motorists using information supplied by the Motorists' Insurance Bureau.

"We will be able to check up to 3,000 vehicles an hour that are travelling on our roads to see if they have a valid certificate of insurance."

Those who are caught driving without a motor insurance policy will face up to eight penalty points on their licence and having their vehicle seized.

Offenders will not be able to retrieve their vehicle until they pay a storage fee and can prove that they have purchased car insurance and are legal to be driving on the roads once more.

It is estimated that 1 in 20 cars on the UK's roads is being driven without adequate motor insurance and accidents involving uninsured vehicles are thought to put up the cost of even a cheap car insurance policy by around £30.
