It was Nicholas Hayek of the watch company Swatch who came up with the idea for the Smart car. In 1991 Swatch tried to form a partnership with Volkswagen to make his idea a reality. However, a change of management in Volkswagen and unfavourable market research resulted in the partnership being scrapped. In 1994 Swatch joined up with Mercedes-Benz and started putting their plan for a Micro Compact Car into action. By 1998, the Smart car was released. Smart stands for Swatch Mercedes Art and the brand of cars continue to be called this, even though Swatch pulled out of the partnership in the same year as the first Smart car hit the streets. |
The car was named the Fortwo in respect of its ability to hold two passengers and found popularity amongst young people living in cities across Europe. It is one of the lightest and smallest cars in the European market and is particularly suited to the urban environment with its amazing knack of being able to fit in a parking space where no other car can.
The range was extended with the addition of the Smart roadster in 2003 and the Forfour in 2004. The roadster received some good reviews but was quite costly and resulting sales figures did not impress Mercedes-Benz. As a consequence, the model was discontinued in 2005.
The Forfour is a hatchback supermini that is more practical for a young family than a little Fortwo. It is built at the same plant as the Mitsubishi Colt and the two cars share many of the components.
