The cheapest car insurance quote and driving other people's cars
Driving without full cover can seriously jeopardise your chances of getting the cheapest car insurance quote. A recent case involving a father of newborn twins highlights the importance of ensuring you are fully covered by car insurance no matter what the circumstances.
Rushing his two day old twins into hospital after one of them was called in for tests; the father had not stopped to think about whether he was insured on his wife's car. As she was unable to drive following a caesarean to deliver their children, the father drove the children to the hospital himself and unluckily got stopped by police on the way.
After appearing in court, the driver managed to avoid a six-month driving ban after the judge decided he was not thinking clearly when he made the decision to drive. However the father still faces losing his job after he was disqualified from driving for eight weeks as well as being ordered to pay a £280 fine and £35 court costs.
This perfectly exemplifies that no matter how urgent your circumstances, you can't take chances driving an uninsured car. As the case above illustrates, driving without insurance is considered a serious offence and consequently carries serious penalties. Depending on previous motoring convictions, drivers can face immediate disqualification, 6-8 penalty points on your licence along with a £200 fine. The police also have the power to seize a car at the roadside and charge you the cost of transporting and storing the vehicle. If you do not reclaim it within 14 days with evidence of valid insurance, your car could even be scrapped.
Driving without insurance and failure to produce proof of valid insurance are two separate offences. A driver must not only be insured but also have valid documents to prove it. If you cannot produce the documents immediately on request, you must take them to your nearest police station within seven working days. If you fail to show them within this time, this counts as an offence.
Adding yourself to someone else's car insurance is easy to do and depending on your driving history and years of no claims bonus, you could actually bring the price of their insurance down rather than costing them extra. Considering the severe penalties for driving without insurance, it is well worth adding yourself to your partner's or relative's car insurance just in case you do one day need to drive it.
