Uninsured drivers face 'car crush' threat
A tough crackdown on uninsured drivers launches this autumn that is set to lead to cars without cover being seized and crushed - but also potentially helping cut car insurance rates.
With over 23,000 fatalities and injuries caused by motorists who have no insurance, the government-led initiative aims to target those who refuse to buy cover.
The clampdown is starting this month with publicity getting underway to highlight the introduction of a new motoring offence - keeping a car uninsured.
Ministers say vehicle owners are due be warned by post, and face £100 fines and crushing of their vehicles if they do not purchase cover.
Current law permits prosecution of uninsured motorists only if they are caught while driving. It is planned that police will cross-check DVLA computer systems with insurers' databases.
Reducing uninsured driving by a third would save the insurance industry £764m over five years, according to the Department for Transport. Official estimates reckon car insurance rates could then drop by as much as £30.
