When obtaining your car insurance quote you have to put a value on your car. Sometimes this can be confusing. Is the 'value' what you paid for it, or what you would want if you were to sell the vehicle, and if you mistakenly over-inflate the value of the car, are you committing fraud?
The Financial Ombudsman Service say that an exaggeration is not always fraud.
Many people feel their vehicle is worth more than the value placed upon it by the insurance company's assessment engineer, but in the case of a written off vehicle the customer will not normally receive more than the "market value" when an insurance claim is settled, so the customer's overstatement of the car's worth at the time of insurance does not render the claim void as a result of fraud.
To substantiate an accusation of a fraudulent claim, the insurance company must prove that the customer is trying to obtain more than he or she is entitled to.
