Cutting back on insurance for cars doesn't make you "green"
In a recession there are many commercial casualties as people who fear for their jobs and those who have to take pay cuts or lose huge financial bonuses tighten their belts and say, "what can we cut down on?" Well, insurance for cars is not something that can be put off for a year or two, but buying a new car can, and in early 2009, Britain's motor industry was on the brink of collapse.
So, as a pre-Budget gee-up for the industry and consumers alike, the Prime Minister announced a "green recovery" that would include plans to make massive increases in the British production and utilisation of electric vehicles.
The country was told that councils would be able to bid to be involved in the "green cities" trial where two or three towns would see introduction of an electric car infrastructure to enable wider use of electric and hybrid cars. It was hoped that talks with power companies would enable a network of roadside charging points to be provided.
As an incentive to car buyers, it was mooted that a "scrappage" scheme would be introduced whereby motorists with older, more polluting cars with higher emissions would be offered £2,000 to trade them in for greener, cleaner new vehicles.
Gordon Brown told The Independent that he wanted Great Britain to emerge from the economic crisis as a "low carbon" economy.
He said, "This is a major part of our plan for recovery in the Budget."
He added that incentives would be provided for car manufacturers in a bid to help the UK become a market leader for the production of electric cars. And on the same day an announcement was made by the European Investment Bank that they had approved a loan to Jaguar Land Rover of £340m to develop "green" cars, with Nissan's plants in Sunderland and Spain benefiting from a £373m loan for the same purpose.
