Cheap insurance for car drivers who have gone green
When you're buying insurance for cars you tend to think about cost and how you can get the best deal. New cars generally have great safety features and the most up-to-date technology which makes them less of a risk in a car accident, but many consumers also think about the environment when choosing a vehicle and small engines with great 'green' credentials are becoming easier to find.
Cars are gradually getting greener - it's official. In early 2009, figures revealed that carbon dioxide emissions fell by their biggest margin ever in 2007/2008, according to a motor manufacturers' report.
According to the report at the start of 2009 the average new car emitted 158 grams of carbon per kilometre. This represents a 4.2% fall from the 2007 figure and 16.8% reduction on the base level taken in 1997 of 189.8g/km.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) report showed that although the number of cars on UK roads is still increasing, cars are contributing less to the country's total emissions. In 2008 cars accounted for only 11.5% of UK emissions, primarily as a result of new motor manufacturing technology, improved fuel consumption rates and greater awareness by car drivers.
The report revealed that all market sectors of the motor industry witnessed improvements in emission outputs and that changes to vehicle taxation combined with increased consumer awareness appeared to have made buyers move towards "best in class" choices at time of purchase. Most consumers opted for models with emissions within the bottom 25% of their vehicle type's range.
December 2008 also saw new-car regulations put in to place that set targets for vehicle manufacturers to ensure their average fleet emissions were not exceeding 130g/km by 2015. The SMMT revealed that in 2009, 236 vehicle models in the UK emitted less than 130g/km, but an annual improvement of 2.5% would need to be achieved in order to reach the specified target.
The SMMT's chief executive, Paul Everitt, said, "The motor industry has made enormous progress in its work to cut the environmental impact of its products but more must be done if the tough targets set by European legislation are to be met."
