Cheap car insurance company reveals UK motoring attitudes

A poll carried out by Tesco Car Insurance has revealed that over 10 million motorists would like the UK's road laws to be enforced by police patrols rather than speed cameras.

The study, named "Drivers' Attitudes', has been carried out by the UK cheap car insurance provider twice before. A wide range of motoring topics are discussed within the report, which includes drivers' opinions on topics such as road pricing, pollution and the child seat law that was introduced in September 2006.

One of the most notable findings in the research showed that 41% of motorists felt speed cameras did not make the roads a safer place, despite hundreds of new cameras going up every year. When asked what measure would be effective to reduce the crash rate at accident blackspots, 35% of respondents said they believed that a regular police presence was the key.

The cheap car insurance company's research also revealed that 33% of drivers thought that people convicted of drink or drug driving should be banned from the roads for life. Driving under the influence is considered to be one of the most dangerous motoring habits and was reported as such by double the number of people who thought that speeding was the biggest risk.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco Car Insurance, commented: "Our findings reveal a sizeable majority of motorists feel unprotected on the roads, favouring tougher penalties for those breaking the law and trapped between the increasing cost of motoring and lack of viable alternative for their regular journeys."

The company, which specialises in budget motor insurance quotes, also found motorists feel that some laws and government initiatives were not working. Specifically, 60% believed that road pricing was a bad idea, whilst 65% didn't think that the mobile phone law had stopped people from using their mobiles while driving.
