Web searchers look for videos and online car insurance

"Online car insurance", "videos" and "Steve Irwin" were amongst the most popular searches carried out in 2006 by UK internet users, according to Google.

The search engine giant revealed that the number of people watching videos online at sites such as Youtube.com has rocketed in the last year, which makes it the biggest online trend for 2006.

Notable news events from this year have been reflected in the search terms, with "World Cup", "Steve Irwin" and "Big Brother" all featuring in the top 10.

However, it is not only special events that have got people searching on the internet. Millions of people looking for low cost travel used Google to search for deals, as did drivers who wanted cheap car insurance quotes.

Corrine Aldous, of online car insurance firm duck2water Car Insurance Services, said: "We have certainly noticed more and more people getting their motor insurance quotes on the web.

"It's not surprising really - getting car insurance online is much quicker, cheaper and easier than using the phone."
