Cumbrian man faces costly motor insurance quotes after "moment of madness"

A Cumbrian man is facing a driving ban followed by costly motor insurance quotes after he was involved in a hit-and-run crash.

Terrence Satterthwaite, 26 and from Silloth, was driving on his own - despite being a learner driver - when he crashed into a parked car.

Despite being asked to stay at the scene by the owner, he drove off before crashing into another parked car and then a tree. At this point, he apparently reckoned his chances were better without his car and he abandoned the vehicle.

However, his conscience soon caught up with him and he handed himself over to police the next day. He admitted careless driving, failing to stop after an accident, driving without car insurance, and driving without the correct licence.

Mr Satterthwaite's defence solicitor argued that the crashes had occurred shortly after he found his recently ex-girlfriend with another man, and a row had ensued. As a result, his motoring offences had occurred in a "moment of madness".

Carlisle Magistrates banned him from driving and ordered him to pay £70 costs. However, this is not the only financial penalty that Mr Satterthwaite will have to pay, as his car insurance company are likely to substantially increase the cost of his motor insurance quotes.
