Father speaks out over motor insurance quotes for servicemen

A Droitwich father has spoken out over the cost of motor insurance quotes for those in the services.

The 66-year-old had bought his Royal Navy son a Peugeot as a celebration of his returning home from his post in Gibraltar.

However, when he came to arrange car insurance for the vehicle, he was shocked to learn that his son, a petty officer, was classed as "high risk" by First Direct because of his occupation. On this basis, First Direct refused to provide a quote for him, saying that he was too risky to insure despite him never having made a claim.

The Worcestershire man said: "They just kept on saying he's really high risk because of his occupation. He's not going to have the car very long - he's going to Iraq in September."

After being turned down by First Direct, he phoned around seven other insurance companies who were all willing to provide motor insurance quotes for his son. He was able to take one of these companies up on their cover, but remains angry about the situation.

He commented: "It's appalling. We have one of the finest armies in the world and the navy is classed as even more capable. It's disgraceful to treat a man like that."
