Drivers warned not to swap points to save motor insurance quotes

Research by Churchill has shown that thousands of drivers may be trying to preserve their cheap motor insurance quotes and avoid driving bans by swapping penalty points with their partners.

The UK car insurance company has estimated that around 500,000 motorists have swapped points with their partner or family member in order to save either themselves or their loved one from being banned from driving.

This is apparently a very common practice amongst people who share a cheap car insurance policy; that is, one owns the policy, whilst the other is registered as a named driver.

Churchill's survey found that despite the fact 88% of motorists recognise it is illegal to receive points on someone else's behalf, 9% feel that it doesn't make much difference as long as either the car itself or the insurance policy is shared with that person.

A spokesperson for Churchill advised that the best way of avoiding penalty points and the associated effects, such as costlier motor insurance quotes, is to keep within the law.

She said: "This research shows the lengths that some drivers will go to in order to stay on the roads despite committing driving offences such as speeding.

"Trying to escape convictions by swapping points with another person is highly illegal and can lead to prosecution. The way to avoid a speeding ban in the first place is simple - drive responsibly."
