Motor insurance quote evaders face conviction under new offence

A change in the law means that drivers who fail to purchase a new car insurance policy after their old motor insurance expires will be facing a £100 fine, even if they don't use the car.

A new offence termed "keeping a new vehicle while uninsured", which is part of the Road Safety Bill, is aimed at cutting the number of drivers who fail to get motor insurance quotes and drive without any car insurance on the UK's roads.

The change means that if a car does not have any motor insurance and it has not been declared as off the road, the owner will suffer financial penalties.

The car will be clamped or taken away - even if it is parked on a private driveway - and not returned until it can be proven that car insurance has been bought. Drivers wanting their car back will also have to pay a release fee and pay a £100 fine.

It is estimated that there are 1.5 million drivers who don't bother to get motor insurance quotes for their car, which is equivalent to 1 in every twenty motorists on Britain's roads.

The details of the offence are due to be finalised in the coming months, although it is not expected that being caught keeping a new vehicle while uninsured will have a direct impact on motorists' ability to get cheap car insurance.
