Liverpool car insurance crackdown sees results

A major police crackdown on drivers without car insurance in Liverpool has begun to see results, according to motor insurance firms.

Almost 20,000 drivers, a ninth of the motorists who are estimated to be using the road illegally in the city, have had their cars seized by authorities or been in touch with insurance companies to buy cover.

Police launched the crackdown, codenamed Operation Tango, six weeks ago, and according to Liverpool's Daily Post, the number of vehicles now being used without car insurance in the city has dropped from 175,000 to 155,000.

460 vehicles have been confiscated and crushed by the authorities, with many more being returned to finance companies and held until motor insurance is bought and a fine is paid. Local police are attempting to seize 1,000 cars every month and hope to eventually bring the situation under control.

Chief Superintendent of Merseyside Police, Paul Forrester, warned the public, "The message is quite clear: if you go out in a car that is not insured you'll get caught."

Motor insurance companies are also supporting the police crackdown and a Duck2Water Car Insurance Services spokesman said, "There's so many cheap car insurance policies available nowadays that there really is no excuse for not being covered."
