Police give stark car insurance warning

If you were to wander past the Merseyside Police HQ in Liverpool this week, you would see that it's not only clapped-out old Novas and Escorts that motorists with no car insurance choose to drive.

Because proudly displayed on the forecourt, recently cleaned and shining gloriously, are a beautiful BMW 5 Series and a stunning Porsche 911, both recently confiscated by police and flaunted in full view of the public to warn of the risks of driving with no car insurance.

In line with new Government legislation, the police now have the right to seize any car they believe is being driven without motor insurance or road tax, and even have the power to crush a confiscated vehicle or sell it at auction.

Stamped across the cars displayed opposite Liverpool's Albert Dock are big yellow letters saying, 'No Insurance, seized by police', and all that see them can have no doubts that the constabulary mean business.

One officer, who preferred not to be named in order to preserve his hidden identity, said, "Under Section 152 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005, uninsured vehicles and those being driven without an appropriate licence will be seized."

The officer also told reporters that he believes there are more than 2 million motorists with no car insurance on British roads, and with many fleeing the scene when involved in an accident, premiums for law-abiding motorists are pushed up as a result.

If you know anyone who is driving while disqualified or without car insurance call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or go to www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
