Uninsured petrol thief warned to expect jail
An overweight thief is set to lose his right to cheap car insurance after being banned from driving following his arrest for stealing hundreds of pounds of petrol from fuel stations in Norfolk.
60-year-old disabled James Smith from Great Yarmouth has also been told by magistrates that he faces a possible jail sentence for the twelve month stealing spree which saw him pump over £800 of petrol into his vehicle. On each of the 38 separate occasions he told fuel station staff that he had left his wallet at home, gave a false name and promised to return later.
Prosecuting, Lindsay Pennell told Norwich Magistrates' Court, "It was a very straightforward deception carried out in exactly the same manner for all the offences."
The car Smith was using to commit his crimes had no motor insurance, and the 20 stone man told the court he only committed the crimes because he was bored of sitting at home and "vegetating behind four walls".
Deputy district judge Ken Sheraton adjourned the case for pre-sentencing reports but told Smith to expect to go to prison and said, "You could be looking forward to a different four walls."]
A spokesman from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, specialists in providing cheap car insurance, said, "Driving without motor insurance is bad enough, but stealing petrol too just isn't on. I wouldn't be surprised if this man ends up with a jail sentence."
