A third of motorists won't lose cheap car insurance over petty vandalism
A survey by Direct Line has revealed that one in three drivers don't claim on their motor insurance policy after minor vandalism because they want to preserve their cheap car insurance rates.
A no claims bonus can account for a 75% discount on motor insurance and the research revealed that many drivers are unwilling to give this up, especially if the damage is relatively cheap to repair.
Emma Hoyler, spokesperson for the cheap car insurance company, said: "What we have found is that people aren't tending to claim on incidents of vandalism and therefore insurance costs are not affected."
"This is because the cost of the claim would come to around £150 for minor damage and that equals the cost of your excess anyway so a lot of people instead of losing their no-claims bonus will just pay for the damage themselves."
Direct Line also found that vandalism is rife in certain parts of the UK, whilst practically nonexistent in others. Millions of pounds worth of motor insurance claims were made in Birmingham, Edinburgh, London, Manchester and the Wirral, whilst most drivers in rural areas kept their cheap car insurance intact.
