20mph zones may threaten motor insurance quotes

The Safe Speed campaign has warned that the new 20mph zones being introduced may have negative implications for killed and serious injury (KSI) rates and motor insurance quotes.

Statistics provided by Safe Speed reveal that people are actually more likely to die or be seriously injured in a 20mph zone than a 30mph zone.

The reason for this difference are not known, although Safe Speed speculate it could be due to "an illusion of safety" or people spending too much time watching their speedometer rather than the road.

This finding has prompted concern that there will be a rise in the number of people being seriously hurt in the 20mph zones, which are being installed in areas of particular danger, such as around schools.

Paul Smith, Safe Speed spokesman, said: "It isn't safe to continue to roll out 20mph zones willy nilly until we have a proper understanding of the higher average crash severity that they are associated with."

Corrine Aldous, of cheap motor insurance quote company duck2water Car Insurance Services, said: "It is certainly startling that 20mph zones seem to be less safe than 30mph areas and these findings suggest that there needs to be further research into this trend."
