Number of motorists caught without car insurance in Devon and Cornwall triples
Not even online car insurance quotes will be cheap for the thousands of motorists who were caught breaking the law in 2006 by police in Devon and Cornwall.
A crackdown on drivers who are not covered by a car insurance policy saw more than 9,000 motorists prosecuted between April and September this year.
This figure is more than three times last year's, a rise which the police put down to better detection systems such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
Insp Richard Pryce from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Traffic Police said: "The message to all those who drive vehicles is clear.
"We have the technology and we are using it to remove all uninsured vehicles from our roads," he finished.
People who drive without motor insurance can be fined £5,000 as well as getting between six and eight points imposed on their driving licence. When caught, their vehicle may also be seized by police and only released when a suitable car insurance document is produced. They will also face storage charges for this period.
Corrine Aldous of online car insurance firm duck2water Car Insurance Services commented: "The technology being used by police is revealing the huge scale of uninsured driving in the UK.
"People who do drive without car insurance have a real impact on everyone else's motor insurance premiums so as soon as they are removed from our roads, the better."
