27% say cheap car insurance quotes important for new car

Research by AA Personal Loans has revealed that more people are considering the cost of car insurance quotes and "green" issues when purchasing a new car.

When asked what the main factors were in choosing a new car, 31% of the drivers interviewed said that they wanted a vehicle with low maintenance costs, whilst 27% cited cheap car insurance quotes and fuel economy as their primary concerns.

The research findings also showed that the number of people wanting an eco-friendly car has gone up by more than a third in the last year, with 20% now putting "green" factors first.

However, many of those who say they want an eco-friendly car may also get cheap motor insurance quotes, as this type of vehicle tends to qualify for a low insurance group.

As a result of this apparent trend for cheap-to-run, more environmentally-friendly cars, fewer people are expected to choose sportier models this year.

However, AA Personal Loans does warn that drivers may not be applying the same degree of effort that they show in choosing a car when it comes to paying for it.

A spokesperson for AA Personal Loans said: "Our concern at the AA is that the savvyness people show in the cost of running a car is not mirrored in how they buy them. Too many people take expensive forecourt finance, not shopping around for a good deal.

"Convenience is costing Brits million each year."
