Eight hours spent talking to cheap car insurance firms after accident
Research by Accident Exchange has revealed that car accidents have a huge effect on the economy, costing the UK over £1bn each year.
A large proportion of this cost results from lost working days, as the average person who has been involved in a car accident will have to take 3.5 days off work as a result.
When the researchers looked into this further, they found that people spend around eight hours on the phone dealing with their own cheap car insurance company and the third party's motor insurance firm.
Steve Evans, chief executive of Accident Exchange, commented: "Until you have been in an accident, it is hard to appreciate just how much hassle and time is involved in dealing with the fall-out."
As well as having to sort out details with cheap car insurance companies, people also spend hours visiting garages for repair estimates, arranging a hire car and waiting for its delivery. After all that, there is plenty of paperwork to be filled out, which takes a further hour or so.
Mr Evans added: "With so many disparate parties involved in the chain it is easy to see how the hours turn into days. By its nature, it means the consumer has no option but to conduct much of the chasing during the working day.
"Unfortunately, the economic and financial headaches don't take into account the emotion and stress associated in getting yourself back on the road. It can turn into a real saga so easily."
Accident Exchange also mentioned that if an accident has been caused by someone who doesn't have a valid motor insurance policy, the process can be more complicated and take even longer.
