Cheap car insurance company provides fog advice

RIAS, a company which specialises in cheap car insurance for over 50s, is advising motorists on how to stay safe whilst driving in fog.

With forecasters predicting plenty of thick fog across the UK for November, the UK motor insurance company has provided a number of tips designed to keep the car accident rate down.

RIAS advises motorists to keep a good gap between them and the car in front, even though it is tempting to drive closer and use their rear lights as a guide. It warns that this practice could result in rear-end car accidents if they need to stop suddenly.

The cheap car insurance company also encourages motorists to make use of their windscreen wipers and windscreen demisters to ensure that their visibility is as good as possible. Similarly, they should make sure that they are easily seen by other motorists too, by keeping their dipped headlights on and using their fog lights where visibility is seriously reduced.

A spokesperson for RIAS said: "When severe weather hits - such as snow or wind and rain storms - we are far more likely to stay off the road but we also urge drivers to take stock and be prepared for these other conditions too.

"Driving in busy traffic on a clear day is challenging enough, but you should be extra careful when driving in fog as visibility can seriously deteriorate in a matter of minutes - or metres."
