Autopark could end cheap car insurance worry for bad parkers
BMW engineers are designing a special device that could save hundreds of drivers a year from losing their cheap car insurance after misjudging the width of their garage.
The popular manufacturer has already produced a "remote parking assist" prototype that allows a vehicle to park itself at the touch of a button.
It is hoped that this technology will turn parking into simplicity itself and avoid many motor insurance nightmares.
All the motorist need do is come to a halt near the garage and use the autopark button on a keyring to initiate the parking. A sensor in the car will pick up the position of a reflector mounted on the back wall of the garage and calculate the correct angles on this basis.
The car will then slowly position itself at about 2mph until it is safely inside the garage.
BMW explained that there were inbuilt safety mechanisms which would prevent the car crashing into anything: "If a child left a bicycle in the path of the car, or the car was too close to the garage entrance, then it would stop almost immediately."
A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance company Endsleigh Insurance commented: "It's an innovative idea and we certainly get a number of claims every year from bad parkers.
"We'll have to look at it very carefully from an insurance perspective and what happens if your car effectively has an accident without you in it."
