BIBA plans could mean cheaper motor insurance quotes

UK motorists could see cheaper motor insurance quotes hitting the market if the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) succeeds in its plans to allow brokers to offer black box-based policies.

The organisation is looking to compete with direct insurers, such as Norwich Union, who are already utilising black box technology and offering cheap car insurance on this basis.

BIBA is hoping to see a universal system created which would allow drivers to switch insurance provider without having to pay for a change to their black box.

A spokesperson for BIBA commented: "Brokers consider the direct writers using this technology as a real threat.

"It is important for them to know that we can compete. If road pricing is coming it is important for us to stay ahead of the game."

Corrine Aldous, spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services, added: "We are definitely behind any move to make motor insurance quotes cheaper for UK drivers, and this sounds like one way this could really be achieved."
